The Sooners finally stopped the Gators’ bats, after losing the lead twice in the bottom of the inning with two outs, to take Game 1 over Florida in the Women’s College World Series.
Nicole Mendes gave Oklahoma their first lead of the game in the sixth inning with a home run over the right-field wall. But, Florida battled back with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning when Sophia Reynoso hit a fly ball that dropped for a double allowing Aleshia Ocasio to score from first base.
In the top of the 12th, the Sooners once again regained the lead when Fale Aviu crushed a 2-run homer to deep right field, making it 4-2, OU.
With two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning and down 4-2, Florida stayed alive when Amanda Lorenz connected on an RBI double that tied it at 4-4.
Finally, in the top of the 17th inning, Shay Knighten connected on a 3-run long ball to put the Sooners up 7-4 and hung on to defeat the Gators 7-5.
